Passage Two

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: A well-documented body of information exists showing that noise can affect human in both

physiological and psychological ways. Hearing losses in particular occupations such as boiler-making and construction work are well known. In fact, however, we all find hearing more difficult as we age. Young ears can distinguish a wide range of sounds from low to very high frequencies, while older ears lose the ability to distinguish high-pitched sounds. A comparison of some industrialized versus non-industrialized peoples suggests that this hearing loss may not be the must-be result of old age. Furthermore, a closer examination of other data reveals economic effects. For instance, airports are currently operating at less capacity because of noise regulations which restrict their hours of operation. Job performance can be seriously affected by loud noise, especially if accuracy and mental effort are involved. The use of outdoor areas for conversation is not possible for an estimated 5 to 10 million people who live or work in urban areas. When interference with television or speech or sleep is included, as many as 22 to 44 million people can be said to have lost part of the use of their homes and grounds because of noise. Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious

They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteems, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. Should We Encourage the Development of Private Cars

or Public Transportation

One of the controversial issues today is whether we should encourage the development of private cars or public transportation. Although some people believe the quick development of

private cars is the boom of our economy, in this essay I will argue priorities should be given to the development of our public transportation system.

One reason for this is that China is a country with the largest population in the world. If only 10 % of its population possess a car, this will make the roads overcrowded and congested while giving priorities to the public transport development will not only help ease the traffic jams, but also improve the living environment. Besides, some public transportation systems such as subways and light ways cause less pollution since they are driven by electricity. The most important reason for my argument is that public transportation system can carry more passengers, which fits the situation in a country where what we need is not more cars but cars with more people.

Of course, the development of private cars is inevitable but based on the condition of our country, it is vital to give our preference to the development of public transportation system.
