single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinion. An important way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections? News stories give facts, not the author’s opinions. Editorials do the opposite: you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author’s name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor. You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages. Most of all, the more you know about the current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently. (210 words)

11. To read a large newspaper, a good way is ________.

C) how to tell apart different news sections D) how to read newspapers effectively

Passage Two

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: A well-documented body of information exists showing that noise can affect human in both

2

physiological and psychological ways. Hearing losses in particular occupations such as boiler-making and construction work are well known. In fact, however, we all find hearing more difficult as we age. Young ears can distinguish a wide range of sounds from low to very high frequencies, while older ears lose the ability to distinguish high-pitched sounds. A comparison of some industrialized versus non-industrialized peoples suggests that this hearing loss may not be the must-be result of old age. Furthermore, a closer examination of other data reveals economic effects. For instance, airports are currently operating at less capacity because of noise regulations which restrict their hours of operation. Job performance can be seriously affected by loud noise, especially if accuracy and mental effort are involved. The use of outdoor areas for conversation is not possible for an estimated 5 to 10 million people who live or work in urban areas. When interference with television or speech or sleep is included, as many as 22 to 44 million people can be said to have lost part of the use of their homes and grounds because of noise. Thus noise pollution is a serious environmental concern. Much more effort should be made to warn people of the grave effects which may stem from an excessively noisy environment.(227 words)

16. Boiler-making and construction work are given as examples of ________.

18. Because of the noise pollution, many airports ________.

A) have to operate for a longer time B) can not operate any longer

C) have to reduce their operation hours D) have to close earlier than usual

19. Because of the loud noise, millions of people in urban areas ________.

A) cannot watch TV

B) cannot have normal conversations in outdoor areas C) cannot sleep at night

D) cannot give speech to others

20. The best title for the passage might be ________.

A) Economic Consequences of Noise B) Ways of Controlling Noise C) Sources of Loud Noise D) Noise Pollution

Passage Three

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious

3

and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and they way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteems, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life. (2 words)

21. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” A) Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.

B) People’s shyness made them care too much about their appearance and actions. C) It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments. D) Shy people think they are different from others. 22. According to the writer, self-awareness is _______. A) a good quality B) the cause of unhappiness C) harmful to people D) a weak point of shy people 23. When being praised, shy people feel that it is _______. A) good B) unreal C) very reasonable D) harmful 24. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A) Shyness helps us to develop our potential.

B) Shyness enables us to understand ourselves better. C) Shyness can block our chances for a rich life.

D) Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem.

25. It can be inferred from the passage that shy people _______. A) should find more of their weakness B) should understand themselves in the right way C) had better ignore their weakness

D) can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteem

Passage Four

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

4

There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.

The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.

Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(221 words)

26. Our long-term goals mean a lot ____________.

A) If we cannot reach solid short-term goals B) If we complete the short-term goals C) If we have dreams of the future D) If we put forward some plans 27. New short-term goals are built upon ____________.

A) a daily basis B) your achievement in a week C) current activities D) the goals that have been completed 28. When we complete each step of our goals, ____________.

A) we will win final success B) we are overwhelmed C) we should build up confidence of success D) we should have strong desire for setting new goals 29. What is the main idea of this passage? ____________

A Life is a dynamic thing. B) we should set up long-term goals C) Different kinds of goals in life. D) The limitation of long-term goals. 30. Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage? ____________

A) The long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals

B) The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.

C) Life is a static thing, thus we should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

D) We should often add new short-term goals to those which have been completed.

Part V Writing

Should We Encourage the Development of Private Cars

or Public Transportation

One of the controversial issues today is whether we should encourage the development of private cars or public transportation. Although some people believe the quick development of

8

private cars is the boom of our economy, in this essay I will argue priorities should be given to the development of our public transportation system.

One reason for this is that China is a country with the largest population in the world. If only 10 % of its population possess a car, this will make the roads overcrowded and congested while giving priorities to the public transport development will not only help ease the traffic jams, but also improve the living environment. Besides, some public transportation systems such as subways and light ways cause less pollution since they are driven by electricity. The most important reason for my argument is that public transportation system can carry more passengers, which fits the situation in a country where what we need is not more cars but cars with more people.

Of course, the development of private cars is inevitable but based on the condition of our country, it is vital to give our preference to the development of public transportation system.
