第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A

How I Turned to Be Optimistic

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning. [来源:学科网ZXXK]

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see —the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy. 51. How did the author get to know America?

A. From her relatives.

B. From books and pictures.

C. From radio programs. D. From her mother. 52. Upon leaving for America the author felt_______.

A. excited B. worried C. confused

D. amazed

53. For the first two years in New York, the author _________.

A. often lost her way B. studied in three different schools C. did not think about her future D. got on well with her stepfather [来源:学.科.网 54. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

A. She helped her family with her English. B. She attended a lot of job interviews. C. She worked as a translator. D She paid telephone bills for her family. 55. The author believes that______.

A. her future will be free from troubles B. it is difficult to learn to become patient C. good things will happen if one keeps trying D. there are more good things than bad things B

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit? [来源:学,科,

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution: stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name- calling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non- threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish.

For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “ percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country. 56. This article is mainly about .

A. the lives of school children B. the cause of arguments in schools C. how to analyze youth violence D. how to deal with school conflicts 57. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that .

A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime B. a small conflict can lead to violence C. students tend to lose their temper easily

D. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight

58. Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5? A. To find out who is to blame. B. To get ready to try new things. C. To make clear what the real issue is.

D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match.

59. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that . A. there was decrease in classroom violence

B. there was less student cooperation in the classroom C. more teachers felt better about themselves in schools D. the teacher- student relationship greatly improved 60. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to . A. complain about problems in school education B. teach students different strategies for school life C. advocate teaching conflict management in schools D. inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence C

I have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby’s point of view.

Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have no idea of where a baby’s blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm

down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.

It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four- hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock- watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn’t follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.

Well, at last we have copper- bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (样本) of 10, 419 children born in the early 1990s, taking account of parental education, family income, a child’s sex and age, the mother’s health and feeding style. These results don’t surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels.

I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeding practices. 61. According to Paragraph 2, one reason why a baby cries is that it feels . A. sick B. upset C. sleepy D. hungry 62. What does the author think about Dr King? A. He is strict.

B. He is unkind.

C. He has the wrong idea. D. He sets a timetable for mothers.

63. The word copper-bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .

A. basic

B. reliable

C. surprising D. interesting

. What does the research tell us about feeding a baby on demand? A. The baby will sleep well.

B. The baby will have its brain harmed. C. The baby will have a low blood sugar level. D. The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8. 65. The author supports feeding the baby . A. in the night B. every four hours

C. whenever it wants food D. according to its blood sugar level

D

The need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world's supply of water. With 97% of the world's water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. Although the idea of a water shortage(短缺) seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the world's agricultural industries experience constant water shortages.

Although dams can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution(重新安排) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. Where valleys are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming

requirements.

This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation. In Texas, farmers' overuse of irrigation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.

Saudi Arabia's attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry. 66. From the first two paragraphs we learn that________. A. much of the world's water is available for use B. the costs of water redistribution should be considered C. people in high rainfall countries feel lucky

D. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world 67. Which of the following is true?

A. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%. B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages. C. The underground water in Saudi Arabia might run out in 50 years.

D. Good management of water use resulted from the project in the Central Valley. 68. What can we learn about Saudi Arabia from the passage?

A. Saudi Arabia made a great contribution to the protection of irrigation water. B. There will be a large amount of wheat to be grown in Saudi Arabia in the future.

C. People are not a bit worried about the irrigation water from underground reserves in Saudi Arabia. D. The desert area in Saudi Arabia is a place where the underground reserves will decrease gradually. 69. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows? A. Steps to improving water use management. B. Ways to reduce the costs of building dams. C. Measures to deal with worldwide water shortages. D. Approaches to handling the pressure on water supply. 70. The text is mainly about________. A. water supply and increasing population B. water redistribution and wildlife protection C. water use management and agriculture D. water shortages and environmental protection

阅读下面的短文,请依据短文后的要求答题(请留意问题后的字数要求)。

My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.

Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.”Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn't know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I've felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”

A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I've come to believe he'd want me to move on to what come next: to be proud of and believe in, somebody else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. As mothers, our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don't retreat because they're afraid to fail. They're only afraid of failing us. They don't

worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father's letter-is of being a disappointment.

Give your children permission to succeed. They're waiting for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts: “Don't worry; you'll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back. 71. Dear Sue,

I’m Li Hua, one of your students in China. It’s almost a month since you left . We all miss you and are very grateful for what you did for us.

We are busy as usual. We had an English speech contest the other day. I won the first prize! This again reminds me of all your kind help. Do you still remember the trees we planted together on the hill behind the school? Yesterday, we went there and watered them. The tree you planted yourself is growing well, and the whole class decided to name it Sue Wood. Will you come back to see Sue Wood?

How is everything with you lately? We are eager to know more about you and your American students. Hope to keep in touch with you.

Yours Li Hua
