Yesterday, I went to the bookstore to pick up a present for my mother's upcoming birthday. I found one of the books I wanted, but not the other one my mother had discussed with me the other day. When I went to pay. I asked the clerk behind the counter if I could order the second book.
A lady was standing in line behind me at the checkout. The clerk said she could order the book. but asked if I would mind letting the lady behind me pay for her purchases first. The lady behind me said no and that it was fine to wait.
It took nearly 15 minutes to put my order through! The lady behind me chatted agreeably with us for the entire time. When it finally came time for me to pay, I placed two $10 off cards on the counter. The clerk informed me the offer was only valid(有效) for the book I was purchasing in-store and wouldn't work for the book I'd ordered. This meant that I'd have one $ 10 card left.
\"You can come back and purchase another book.\" the clerk smiled. \"The offer is valid until the end of the week.\" I thought about this for a millisecond and then turned around to face the lady behind me who'd been so patient, kind, and charming through the very long wait at the checkout. \"Here.\" I gave her the $10 off card. She was very surprised and said. \"Really?\"
The gift didn't cost me anything. I knew I wouldn't be back before the end of the week and it rewarded someone whose attitude left a smile in my heart. Most definitely a win-win moment. 〔1〕What can we learn from the first paragraph?

On paper, hydrogen (H2) looks like a dream fuel. Coal, oil, and natural gas produce carbon dioxide, which warms the earth when burned, Hydrogen produces pure water. Hydrogen packs more energy into less space than a battery (but certainly less than petrol) . Also, empty tanks (燃料箱) can be refilled with hydrogen much faster than refilling empty batteries with electricity.
While in practice, things are trickier. Storing a meaningful amount of hydrogen gas requires pressing it several hundred-fold. Changing it into the liquid form is another option, but it should be cooled to-253C. Both processes require a heavy and strong tank. While a 700 bar tank is acceptable for a city bus or a truck, adapting it for use in small vehicles is very difficult because the pressure during refilling would be too great. The solution? Powerpaste.
A German team of researchers, led by Marcus Vogt, have come up with an interesting \"powerpaste\store hydrogen energy at atmospheric pressure, ready for release when needed. It is so named because it comes in tubes and looks like toothpaste (牙膏) , not in its traditional form of gas.
The main ingredient (原料) of the paste is magnesium hydride, a substance that reacts with water to form hydrogen. The escaped hydrogen can then be directed into a fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to produce electric power.
Refueling is very simple, as instead of going to a filling station, drivers and riders can simply replace an empty tube with a new one and refill the water tank.
Given that powerpaste only begins to break down at temperatures of around 250℃ it remains safe even when a vehicle stands in the baking sun for hours.
However, we will have to be patient. Just because researchers have succeeded in developing a new fueling way does not mean that we can expect to see such vehicles on the road anytime soon. It will indeed be several years before this concept is turned into reality.
〔1〕As a fuel, what is the advantage of hydrogen over oil? A.Refilling empty tanks will be more convenient.
B.It is less likely to worsen global warming
C.More energy can be packed in the same space.
D.It will produce pure water for people to drink.
〔2〕What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The practical difficulties to use hydrogen as fuel in small vehicles.
B.The detailed processes of adapting a strong tank in small vehicles.
C.The differences in fueling between large vehicles and small ones.
D.The tricks of building strong tanks in small vehicles.
〔3〕The author mentions the refueling process to show that powerpaste is______________.
D.environment-friendly
〔4〕Why does the author call on the readers to be patient? A.Powerpaste-driven vehicles sometimes move very slowly on the road.
B.Practical use of powerpaste-driven vehicles will not come very soon.
C.Powerpaste-driven vehicles can only work after being in the sun for hours
D.It will be years before the researchers work out the concept of powerpaste.

In our magazine's document room, from the June 1920 issue, I discovered a piece, What Editors Do, by Hazel Miller. What she talks about caught my eye: The first World War and its ending just two years before. \"During 1917 and 1918, when the World War was going, there was a huge demand for war material,\" Miller writes. \"Most magazines were carrying practically nothing but war stories. When the War ended in November, 1918, some editors still had a goodly supply of war fiction and articles—for which they had paid real money—on their hands, which most people by now are fed up with.\"
Her words have stuck with me for the past 12 months as we've weighed which COVID-19 stories to run and which to hold. I'm writing these words with thick snow outside my window, but they will reach you in the green of spring. Will you be vaccinated(接种疫苗) and tired of reading about COVID-19 then?
We say writing is an art, and publishing is a business, but I worry we forget that publishing is also a gamble(), Except for the immediate publication, everyone in the industry—agents, acquiring editors, magazine and journal editors, etc.—are betting on a story's success in a future we cannot see. As is the nature of fortune telling, we are not so sure we will not occasionally lose: The 1920 editors sitting on a store of war stories no one wants, for example.
With so many factors outside your control, and so much uncertainty in the industry, isn't it better to have stories written from the heart that you are truly enthusiastic about rather than some to please an ever-changing publishing market?
My future reader, it's my hope that this issue finds you this spring doing just that: Writing the stories you need to tell—and the ones that will delight your own future readers for years to come. 〔1〕What does the writer probably do? A.A journalist. B.An editor. C.A librarian. D.A historian.
〔2〕What did Miller's words suggest? A.The First World War shouldn't have ended too soon.
B.Some editors would make a great fortune by storing war material
C.In the post-war years, people still enjoyed reading about war.
D.Too much war material had been stored by some editors.
〔3〕The writer find Miller's words especially useful when_______. A.deciding which COVID-19 stories to publish
B.writing during the winter months
C.waiting for the green of spring
D.expecting to be vaccinated
〔4〕What is the writer's message to the potential authors? A.To please the present publishing market.
B.To learn the nature of fortune-telling
C.To control as many factors as possible.
D.To write from the heart for the future readers.

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling \"Help!\" while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.
At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. \"The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're killing something,\" he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.
\"He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him.\" says Hansen.
Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. \"I couldn't hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open,\" says Hansen.
As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn't open. \"A dog grabbed Ethan's foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me,\" he says. 注意:
1〕续写词数应为150左右;

Extreme athletes have been using wingsuits (翼装) to fly for many years. However, the pull of gravity makes it impossible to speed up or fly higher. To push past the limitations, Peter Salzmann teamed up with German car maker BMW. The result is an electrified wingsuit, which allows flyers to rise to higher altitudes at the speed of up to 186 miles per hour!
The 33-year-old professional wingsuit pilot first thought of creating the design in 2021, \"At the time, I was developing suits for skydiving with a friend,\" he explains. \"One evening after a day of testing, we threw out lots of ideas about how we could improve performance. One of them was a supporting motor-and it's an idea I just couldn't shake off. I found the idea of being able to jump from my local mountain wearing the wingsuit and land in my garden exciting.\"
To help with the process, Salzmann reached out to the experts at BMW's Designworks Studio. It took the team three years and multiple test jumps to perfect the design. The result is an updated version of wingsuit with two
5-inch propellers (螺旋桨), Powered by a battery, the propellers can be controlled using an on/off switch and even stopped mid-flight using the emergency button, if the flyer encounters an airplane or a flock of birds. On November 6, 2021, Salzmann, wearing his hi-tech suit, leaped from a helicopter from an altitude of 10,000 feet to soar around the mountain peaks. The expert pilot fired up the electric motors and rocketed forward, gliding above four mountain peaks. The task completed, the pilot opened his parachute (降落伞) and gently landed.
It is unclear if Salzmann and BMW plan to make the electrified wingsuits available to the general public. But, one can always hope!

In 1998, people in Na Doi, a quiet village in northwest Thailand, noticed that their fish catches in the nearby Ngao River were declining. The fish they did manage to net were also getting smaller. Together, Na Doi's 75 households decided to try a new solution: they would set aside a small stretch of river to be strictly off-limits to fishing.
The rules are usually simple: no fishing of any kind in an agreed-upon area marked by flags or signs. While freshwater reserves won't solve everything, in places where fish populations are under pressure, they can give species much-needed breathing room to rebuild their numbers, ultimately making them better able to weather other environmental problems.
Na Doi was the second village in the Ngao River valley to adopt this pioneering approach to freshwater fisheries management. Since the late 1990s, at least 50 other villages there have done the same. As a whole, the entirely grassroots-led reserves have been surprisingly successful, according to findings recently published in Nature. Most importantly, the Thailand case provides probably the best real-world proof that fisheries reserves can benefit not just oceans, but freshwater, too
In 2021. Aaron Koning, then a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin, began investigating the Ngao River valley reserves to see how widespread and successful they truly were. Koning found, not surprisingly, that older and bigger reserves were more successful, because they offered more time and space—including more
kinds of habitat—in which to rebuild fish populations and re-establish rare species. But even reserves established in the last couple of years showed clear benefits from being spared intense fishing pressure. \"Reserves that were located closer to a village tended to have an advantage,\" Koning says, \"probably because villagers were better able to enforce the rules.\"
By comparing different systems and approaches around the world, Koning and his colleagues hope to identify common factors for success that could be tailored to diverse rivers and lakes. 〔1〕What drove Na Doi to create freshwater reserves? A.The declining of the freshwater.
B.The success of the nearby villages.
C.The increasing fish populations.
D.The worsening of the fishing conditions.
〔2〕What does the success of Thailand freshwater reserves suggest? A.Fisheries reserves are helpful in freshwater.
B.Thailand is a pioneer in fisheries management.
C.The Thailand approach has been applied worldwide.
D.Many fish species need to rebuild their numbers,
〔3〕Aaron Koning found reserves that________ were more successful. A.had better rules B.were bigger and older
C.had more fish populations D.were created more recently
〔4〕What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Grassroots-led Reserves Inspire the Worlds

Art therapy (治疗) involves the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, coloring, or sculpting to help people express themselves artistically and examine the psychological and emotional undertones. With the guidance of an art therapist, clients car \"decode\" the nonverbal messages in these art forms, which lead to a better understanding of their feelings and behavior so they can resolve deeper issues.
Art therapy helps people explore their emotions, relieve stress. improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and cope with a physical illness or disability. No artistic talent is necessary for art therapy to succeed, because the therapeutic process is not about the artistic value of the work, but rather about finding associations between the creative choices made and a client's inner life. The artwork can be used as a springboard for reawakening memories and telling stories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind
As with any form of therapy, your first session will consist of your talking to the therapist about why you want to find help and learning what the therapist has to offer Together, you will come up with a treatment plan that involves creating some form of artwork. Once you begin creating, the therapist may, at times, simply observe your process as you work, without interrupting. When you have finished a piece of artwork—and sometimes
while you are still working on it-the therapist will ask you questions of how you feel about the artistic process, what is easy or difficult about creating your artwork, and what thoughts or memories you might have had while you are working. Generally, the therapist will ask about your experience and feelings before providing any observations.
Art therapy is founded on the belief that self-expression through artistic creation has therapeutic value for those who are healing or seeking deeper understanding of themselves and their personalities. Art therapists are trained to understand the roles that various art media like color can play in the therapeutic process and how these tools can help reveal one's thoughts, feelings, and psychological disposition. 〔1〕What is the author's main purpose in writing the text? When most people look back on middle school, they remember their best friends, and so do I. But what I remember may be a little different. Let me explain.
My heart was pounding when I climbed onto the school bus on the first day of middle school. As I was looking for a seat, my eyes landed on two girls sitting together. They smiled at me and pointed to the seat next to theirs. I sat down and we chatted. They were Heather and Jessica. It turned out that we had the first period together and we became friends. We ate lunch together, hung out in the park and played games in Jessica's room on weekends. But our friendship wasn't without its faults. Jessica had an \"I'm-the-boss\" personality. She always had to be in charge.
One time, the three of us went to the mall. I wanted to go to Abercrombie. But Jessica rolled her eyes and told me to go to Rave. Not wanting to argue, I followed her. This skirt would look great on you. \"Jessica exclaimed. \"Try it on!\" \"I don't like it,\" I said.
Jessica gave me a death glare so I made my way to the dressing room.
I ended up spending fifty dollars on a skirt that I didn't even like, just to make Jessica happy. Throughout the following year, this was how it was. If Jessica went somewhere, Heather and I went there too. I found I was behaving as a pretended version of myself just to please Jessica and to keep her from being mad at me. Then, summer came. Jessica invited Heather and me to go to Cape Cod with her. I decided to go to Florida with another friend instead, so Jessica got angry. I went to Florida and didn't hear from her. 注意:

There's no doubt that Dolly Parton knows how to light up a stage; however, she's also spent a number of decades trying to bring a spark to children's education.
Through programs such as the Buddy Program and the Imagination Library, the American singer is sharing her passion for giving kids a better chance in life across the states and further in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland.
Among other charity efforts, Parton was inspired to introduce the Buddy Program after seeing the alarming dropout rate in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1990. That year 34% of schoolkids dropped out of high school—a decision they reached around fifth or sixth grade. The figures were so shocking that Parton
decided to inspire kids with her new program. So, in the same year, she invited the fifth and sixth graders to her amusement park, Dollywood. She gathered the pupils and asked them to pair up with a friend as part of a motivating buddy system. If both children went on to graduate, she said she would offer them both a $500 check as a reward. That year the percentage of kids abandoning their education dropped to an unbelievable 6%, and continues to be around that rate today.
It was after the success of the Buddy Program that Parton wanted to address the issue of early education even further. To help give kids from disadvantaged backgrounds a better chance at school, the singer started her Imagination Library in 1995. Over the following 25 years the program has seen babies and toddlers enjoy new books every month thanks to her generosity.
And the singer shows no sign of stopping. In 2021, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University to try and help research in the fight against COVID-19.
〔1〕What gave rise to the setting up of the Buddy Program? A.Lack of charity activities.
B.The alarming rate of social crimes.
C.Children's poor living conditions.
D.The great number of children quitting school.
〔2〕Through the Buddy Program, what did Dolly Parton do to help? A.She sponsored high schools. B.She offered money to dropouts.
C.She encouraged learning in pairs. D.She organized amusement activities.
〔3〕In what way did Imagination Library contribute to education? A.It offered a chance for children to go to school.
B.It appealed to the public to value education.
C.It helped build libraries all over the country.
D.It donated books to those less fortunate children.
〔4〕Which of the following words can best describe Dolly Parton? A.Inspiring and generous. B.Courageous and kind.
C.Reliable and honest. D.Smart and patient.

Every four or five years, vast quantities of warm water build up along the west coast of South America. This phenomenon, El Nino, creates storms that cause destructive floods. The result is costly.
Modern farmers come to terms with El Nino. They use money saved in good years to rebuild in bad ones. But history suggests it need not be like that. In a paper published recently, Ari Caramanica, an archaeologist at University of the Pacific, in Lima, shows how it used to be done. And the answer seems to be, \"better\". Dr Caramanica and her colleagues have been studying the Pampa de Mocan, a coastal desert plain in northern Peru. Pampa de Mocan is not suitable for farming. Its soil contains little organic matter and the annual rainfall in non-Nino years is usually less than two centimeters. Today's farmers therefore depend on canals to carry water from local rivers to their fields.
It had been assumed that ancient farmers had a similar arrangement — and so they did. But Dr Caramanica also found eight canals that could carry water far beyond the range of modern farms. She thinks that they were intended to guide the floodwaters arriving during Nino years. Around a quarter of the ancient agricultural infrastructure of this area seems to have been built only for managing Nino-generated floodwaters.
Evidence from pollen supports this theory, revealing that Pampa de Mocan produced lots of crops in some years, while remaining nearly barren in others. The team also uncovered two cisterns in the area serviced by the extended canals. These, probably, were used to store extra flood-water.
These findings suggest that, rather than resisting El Nino, early farmers in Pampa de Mocan were ready to make use of it when it arrived. Modern farmers might do well to learn from them. 〔1〕What does the recent study focus on? A.Living with El Nino. B.Effects of El Nino.
C.Farming on desert. D.Water shortage in Peru.
〔2〕What does the underlined word \"they\" in Paragraph 4 refer to? A.Ancient farmers. B.Rivers. C.Farms. D.Canals.
〔3〕What lesson can be learned from early farmers? A.Every advantage has its disadvantage. B.In every difficulty lies an opportunity.
C.Sharp tools make good work. D.It's never too late to mend.
〔4〕In which section of a website may this text appear? A.Education. B.Travel.
C.Business. D.Science.

During one of the earliest performances of \"Peter Pan,\" the much-loved fantasy play for children, a small boy was invited to watch the production from the balcony. Afterwards he was asked what he liked best about the play. The pirates? The crocodile? Peter Pan flying through the air? The child's response was surprising: \"What I think I liked best was tearing up the program and dropping the bits on people's heads\".
The audience who left the theater with bits of paper in their hair probably wouldn't agree with the boy on the best part of the play. Neither would the caretakers in charge of cleaning the theater afterward. But when J. M. Barrie, the creator of \"Peter Pan,\" heard the boy's comment, he was delighted. He wasn't offended that the boy hadn't paid closer attention to the play. Instead, he considered it one of his favorite reactions to his work. All of us have to deal with decisions made by others – their words, actions and attitudes – that could be considered offensive. This can be particularly difficult when we feel that the values and traditions we hold dear are being rejected or even laughed at.
But just as someone might choose whether or not to do something offensive, we can choose whether or not to be insulted (侮辱). We can choose to give others the benefit of the doubt and not assume mean intent behind their actions. We can love people even if we do not love their choices. After all, isn't it more important – though perhaps more challenging – to love a person than to love words or actions?
Accepting people does not mean approving of or forgiving their decisions. It does not mean giving up our own rights to think and act differently. Nor does it mean we will never feel sad or hurt or disappointed. But at a deeper level, we can be at peace if we focus on love – for love has the power to overcome our disappointment, frustration and pain. And who knows? Our love may even soften a heart. But even if it doesn't, the best approach is still to let love, peace, patience and kindness rule the day. 〔1〕Why does the author mention the play \"Peter Pan\"? A.To support an argument. B.To make a comparison.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To provide an example.
〔2〕What was J. M. Barrie's reaction to the child's response? A.He ignored it. B.He loved it.
C.He felt offended.
D.He couldn't agree more.
〔3〕What does the author tell us to do in Paragraph 4? A.Nurse unkind thoughts.
B.Love people's words and actions.
C.Love people with a tolerant attitude.
D.Do something to prevent being insulted.
〔4〕What can probably be the title of the text? A.Let love rule the day

Jumping out of the car, he approached the man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. \"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this.\" \"Hello, Jack.\" No smile. \"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids.\" \"Yeah, I guess.\" Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

B.Fisheries Reserves Benefit Thailand Rivers
C.Investigate the Ngao River Valley Reserves
D.Na Doi Is Leading Thailand to a Better Future

A.To teach people to be art therapists.

〔2〕Which of the following matters least in the therapeutic process? A.The style of the work. B.The emotions of the client.
C.The memories of the client. D.The artistic value of the work.
〔3〕What does the art therapist's conclusion mainly depend on? A.The client's questions. B.The client's explanations.
C.The therapist's feelings
D.The length of the artistic process.
〔4〕What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Little training is needed to become an art therapist.
B.Choices of art elements reflect people's inner world.

注意:

Every superhero, no matter how small, needs a cape(披风). That was Robyn Rosenberger's motivation when she started sewing superhero caps for kids with cancer, heart defects, and other serious diseases.
It all began when she was making a cape as a birthday present for her nephew. Rosenberger heard of a girl named Brenna who was battling a potentially deadly skin condition called harlequin ichthyosis (鱼鳞病). Anyone going through what she was going through had to be tough. \"I had a happy moment,\" Rosenberger says. \"Brenna was a superhero! She needed a cape.\"
So, Rosenberger sent her one, and Brenna's mother was delighted. Rosenberger found ten more kids online and sent out ten more capes. Before long, she quit her job at a software company to devote herself to tinysuperheroes , a website where people can buy handmade capes for brave kids facing illness and disability.
Since 2021, Rosenberger and her small paid staff have sent more than 12,000 handmade capes to kids in all 500 states and 15 other countries. The capes come in pink, blue, purple, or red and can be decorated with the child's initials(姓氏首字母) or specialized patches, including a heart, a rocket, or a lightning bolt. One receiver was eight-month-old Gabe, who was born with a cleft palate(腭裂) and Coffin-Siris Syndrome, which causes distinct (特有的) facial features. Rosenberger sent him a red cape with a bright yellow G in the center. It was a hit. Gabe is now a fixture on the company's social media posts. \"The TinySuperhero community has been a
wonderful connection to have,\" says Gabe's mom, Kate Glocke. \"In fact, two years later, we still bring Gabe's cape with us to every hospital appointment.\"

On January 22nd, 2021, China said it has established a new monitoring and research center for greenhouse gases and carbon neutrality(碳中和) in order to contribute more to fighting climate change. The official announcement of the Monitoring and Assessment Center for GHGs and Carbon Neutrality (温室气体及碳中和检测评估中心), located in Beijing, was made by the China Meteorological Administration. It is expected to play a vital role in providing both technical and scientific support for researchers. The center will gather top scientists in the field from both home and abroad. Apart from providing ways to achieve carbon neutrality, it will also be helpful to make technological breakthroughs in the next three to five years.
The center is tasked with creating a system to evaluate the effectiveness of the country's efforts to fight climate change. The recruitment (招募) of staff members is expected to be finished in the next two months. A scientific steering committee will also be started in April to guide the center's operation.
China is determined to peak(到达峰值) its carbon dioxide emissions(排放) before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. One of the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic is that humankind must pursue a green
development path and green lifestyle. China will lower its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by more than 65 percent from the 2005 level and increase its share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent. By 2030, China will also increase its forest stock by 6 billion cubic meters from the 2005 level, and bring its total installed capacity (装机容量) of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts.
The establishment of the center proves China's determination to pursue a green development road. It's a concrete action that China has taken to fight the climate challenge. Carbon neutrality, or a net-zero carbon footprint, means reading a balance between carbon emissions and removing pollutants through carbon sinks and other offset (补偿).
China has sped up research and development of equipment to monitor greenhouse gases and carbon neutrality and achieved encouraging results. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the top world standard.
〔1〕Why did China start the Center? A.To produce more greenhouse gases. B.To gather more scientists worldwide. C.To contribute more to fighting climate change. D.To introduce top scientists in carbon neutrality.
〔2〕When will the recruitment of the staff probably finish? A.In January. B.In March. C.In April. D.In May.
〔3〕How soon will China achieve carbon neutrality? A.In 9 years. B.In 16 years. C.In 39 years. D.In 65 years.
〔4〕What does this passage mainly talk about? A.China's new contribution to climate battle. B.China peaks its carbon dioxide emissions. C.The Center's recruiting new members. D.Installed capacity of wind and solar power. 4.阅读理解
Scientists have successfully used satellite cameras to count animals in complex geographical environments, taking environmentalists an important step forward in monitoring populations of endangered species.
For this research, the satellite Worldview 3 used high-quality pictures to monitor African elephants moving through forests and grasslands. The automated(自动化) system detected animals with the same accuracy as humans are able to achieve. The new surveying technique, created by Dr. Olga Isupova at the University of Bath in the UK with some other scientists, allows vast areas of land to be scanned in a matter of minutes, offering a much-needed alternative to human observers counting individual animals from low-flying airplanes. As it sweeps across the land, a satellite can collect over 5,000 km2 of pictures every few minutes, avoiding double counting. Where necessary, the process can be repeated the next day.
The population of African elephants has nose-dived over the past century, mainly due to hunting illegally and habitat (栖息地) ruin. With only 40,000-50,000 elephants left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered.
\"Accurate monitoring is essential if we're to save the species,\" said Dr. Isupove. \"We need to know where the animals are and how many there are.\" Satellite monitoring avoids disturbing animals during date collection and ensures humans are not hurt in the counting process. It also makes it simpler to count animals moving from country to country, as satellites can orbit the planet without regard for border controls or conflict.
This study was not the first to use satellite pictures and algorithms(计数法) to monitor species, but it was the first to reliably monitor animals moving through a complex environment—that is, an environment that includes areas of open grassland, woodland and partial coverage. \"This type of work has been done before with whales, but of course the ocean is all blue, so counting is a lot less challenging,\" said Dr. Isupova. \"As you can imagine, a complex environment makes it much harder to identify animals.\"
The researchers believe their work shows the potential of technology to support environmentalists to protect biodiversity and to slow the progress of the sixth mass extinction(灭绝)—the ongoing extinction event caused by human activity.
〔1〕Why did the scientists create the satellite cameras? A.To count animals in complex environment. B.To increase the number of wild animals. C.To train the skills of observing animals. D.To drive the elephants out of forests in Africa.
〔2〕What can we learn about the new surveying technique? A.It's individual. B.It's complex. C.It's dangerous. D.It's accurate.
〔3〕What is the condition of African elephants?
A.They are rapidly increasing. B.They are in diversity. C.They are rapidly reducing. D.They are in balance.
〔4〕What would be the best title for this passage? A.Making the Satellite Worldview 3 for Biodiversity. B.Using Satellite to Monitor Endangered Species. C.Supporting Hunting with new Technology.
D.Introducing Dr. Olga Isupova at the University of Bath.
