PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich--Steve Flaig wasn't sure how to approach his co-worker with his big news. It would seem brash to walk up and say, \"Hi, I'm Steve, your son.\" How would she react to that, he wondered.
Flaig's long search for his birth mother ended in early October when he learned that she was the woman he previously knew only as Chris, the head cashier at a
Lowe's home-improvement store just outside Grand Rapids, in Kent County's Plainfield Township.
\"I would walk by her, look at her from a distance, not knowing how to approach her,\" Flaig, 22, told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Wednesday. “You don't come stocked with information on how to deal with this.\"
When Lowe's Cos. hired Christine Tallady to work at the store last April, she had no idea that the young delivery driver to whom she was introduced was her son.
She gave birth to him on Oct. 5, 1985, while she was single and not ready to be a mother. It was a difficult decision for her to give him up for adoption.
Tallady left the adoption record open, figuring that her son might someday want to contact her. She often thought of him, particularly on his birthday, but life went on. She got married and had two more children.
Flaig, meanwhile, always knew that he was adopted. His parents, Pat and Lois Flaig, supported him when he decided to search for his birth mother. They had done the same with their younger son, Scott, who found his birth mother almost a year ago.

\"Learning styles\" is a concept which attempts to describe the methods by which people gain information about their environment. People can learn through seeing, hearing, and / or through touching or operating an object. For example, looking at a picture book or reading a textbook involves learning through vision; listening to a lecture live or on tape involves learning through hearing; and pressing buttons to determine how to operate a VCR involves learning kinesthetically (肌肉运动知觉地).
Generally, most people learn using two to three learning styles. Interestingly, people can assess their own interests and lifestyle to determine the ways in which they obtain much of their information about their environment.
One's learning style may affect how well a person performs in an educational setting,
6 / 11
especially from junior high on through college. Schools usually require both auditory (听觉的) learning and visual (视觉的) learning. If one is poor at one of these two ways of learning, he / she will likely depend mostly on his / her strength. (For example, a visual learner may study the textbook rather than rely on the lecture content). Using this logic, if one is poor at both visual and auditory learning, he / she may have difficulty in school.
Furthermore, one's learning style may be connected with one's occupation. For example, those individuals who are kinesthetic learners may tend to have occupations involving their hands, such as shelf stockers (货品上架人员), mechanics, surgeons, or sculptors. Visual learners may tend to have occupations which involve processing visual information, such as data processors, artists, architects, or manufacturing part sorters. Moreover, auditory learners may tend to have jobs which involve processing auditory information, such as sales people, judges, musicians, 9-1-1 operators, and waiters / waitresses.
Once a person’s learning style is determined, relying on this method to teach can greatly increase the possibility that the person will learn. If one is not sure which learning style a child has or how to teach a group of students with different learning styles, the best way to teach could be use all the three styles together.
. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. People use different learning styles to deal with environmental problems. B. Learning styles are different and they affect us.
C. A good learning style can help one get high marks and a good job. D. One can learn well without knowing his / her learning styles.
65. Which of the following statements is NOT true, according to the passage? A. One who can read fast is most probably good at visual learning.
B. Those who are kinesthetic learners may prefer to do work involving their hands. C. Most people use one or two learning styles to get information.
D. People can determine their learning styles by considering their own interest and lifestyle. 66. An operator, according to the passage, must be good at _______. A. visual learning B. auditory learning C. kinesthetic learning D. chatting
67. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Never teach before you know the students' learning styles.
B. A teacher should always use the three styles together while teaching the students. C. Knowing the learner's learning style may help increase teaching efficiency.
D. A student's learning style is the most important factor in the teaching-and-learning process.

A North Dakota farmer Paul Smokov does not need radar or other high-tech equipment to forecast a major snowstorm on the US prairie (大草原). He asks for information from pig spleens (脾).
\"It looks like a normal year with no major storms,\" said the 84-year-old cattle farmer, peering at two of the brown, glistening organs on his kitchen counter like a Gypsy looking into a crystal ball.
If the pig spleen is wide and then gets narrowed, it means winter weather will come early with a mild spring, Smokov said. A narrow-to-wider spleen usually means harsh weather in the spring, he added. The spleens obtained by Smokov this year are pretty uniform in thickness, which means no drastic (激烈的) changes.
Janice Stillman, editor of the Old Farmer's Almanac said she had heard of at least one other pig spleen weather predictor -- Gus Wickstrom of Saskatchewan, Canada -- but he died earlier this year.
Smokov's Ukrainian parents brought their knowledge of pig spleen forecasting with them when they came to the US a century ago. Electricity did not reach Smokov's farm until 1949, .so it

was not possible to listen to the weather forecast of the radio. Smokov was interested in his parents' knowledge of pig spleen forecasting from a child.
\"The spleens are 85% correct, according to my figures,\" he said. As for the weathermen, \"Those guys aren't any better. \"
At the National Weather Service office in North Dakota, meteorologist (气象学家) Vic Jenscn relies on Doppler radar and other sophisticated (精密) scientific instruments. But he is charitable (宽厚) towards folk methods such as Smokov's. \"I can't discount some of these kinds of theories,\" Jensen said. \"It's just another way for people to forecast what's going to happen. \"
The weather service's three-month outlook is typically at least 60% accurate, Jensen said. Forecasters are calling for a normal winter for North Dakota as well.

Plastic bags go out of our life
It has been announced from State Council that no plastic bags can be offered to any customer without charge in supermarkets, shops, etc. The rule will take effect on June, 1st, 2008. As we all know, it's very convenient for us to be given plastic bags when shopping. Nevertheless, they have caused serious environmental pollution, which we call \"white pollution\".
Seen from the given picture, the terrible plastic bags are like piles of white hills, which can not be easily broken down. As a result, the \"white pollutionn is reaching out his claws towards us. thus making rules about it is in great need.
In my opinion, people have come to realize the importance of environment and begin to take
10 / 11
some effective measures to reduce the consumption of plastic bags. Meanwhile, we can use baskets or cloth bags to carry goods instead, which must be good to our health and environment.
