[Also in Group XXII] In a method of bobbing plain spur gears orsplines, the relative feed movement is in a direction inclined to the axis of the work 11and the axis of the grinding or milling tool 8 is inclined to the said direction and issubstantially at right angles to the work axis. The work 11 is mounted with its axis at 10degrees to the direction of traverse of a slide 3 and is rotated by a motor 24 through ashaft 25 carrying a flywheel 27, change gearing 26, traverse compensating gears 19, 21,bevel gears 23, change gears 17 and a clutch 14. A friction brake 16 assists in dampingdriving fluctuations. The hob 8 is carried on a slide 6 and is rotated by a motor 7synchronized with the motor 24 and connected therefo by shafts 28, 29 and a clutch 30.The direction of traverse results in an even wear of the tool across its width.
