OV529-B49 Single-Chip Camera ControllerGeneral Description The OV529 Mobile Camera system is a low cost, lowpowered single chip solution for high-resolution Serial busPDA/cellular phone camera embedded/accessoryapplications. Combined with the OV76xx/OV66xx CMOSVGA/CIF CAMERACHIP™ sensors, the OV529 comprises alow cost, highly integrated serial camera system with noadditional DRAM required. The OV529 can be attached to a wireless or PDA platformas a video or a still camera. When performing as a videocamera, the TFT-LCD panel of the host operates as aviewfinder. Users can send out a snapshot command fromthe host in order to capture a full resolution single framestill picture that is compressed and transfer it to the host. The system blocks of the OV529, as shown below, consistof the CAMERACHIP sensor, optional serial programmemory, and OV529.sensorRS-232Applications •Serial bus PDA/cellular applications combined with the following OmniVision CAMERACHIP families:––OV76xx (VGA)OV66xx (CIF)NOTE: The OV529 supports digital image sensors up toVGA resolution. OV529-B49
Single-Chip Camera Controller
OmniisionFunctional Description
The OV529 is a controller chip that can transfer image data from sensors to wireless/PDA hosts. Figure2 shows the functionalblock diagram of the OV529 single-chip camera controller. The OV529 includes:•Microcontroller•CameraChip Interface•Compression Engine•Program Buffer•Serial Camera Control Bus Interface•Host Interfaces–•RS-232 Serial Interface–5-Wire Serial BusOther Miscellaneous FunctionsThe OV529 supports an external serial EEPROM as an optional program memory (as shown in Figure2).Figure 2 Functional Block DiagramsensorcamerainterfacecompressionbufferinterfaceRS-2325-wireparallelhostSCCBinterfacemicrocontrollerEEPROM(optional)programbuffersystemcontrolOV529control pathdata path529B49_BDS_0032Proprietary to OmniVision Technologies, Inc.Version 1.3, August 23, 2007
OmniisionFunctional Description
Microcontroller
The Microcontroller operates as an embedded controlleronly and can be programmed by the user if customapplications are desired. Contact OmniVision for furtherinformation on the Microcontroller implementation.
Serial Camera Control Bus Interface
The Serial Camera Control Bus (SCCB) is implemented toget more flexibility to interface with cameras.
Host Interfaces
CAMERACHIP Interface
The OV529 takes 8-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 progressive videodata from the OV76xx/OV66xx CAMERACHIP imagesensor. The CAMERACHIP interface synchronizes withinput video data and performs down-sampling, clampingand windowing functions on the desired resolution, as wellas color conversion requested by users through Serial bushost commands.
The OV529 features three host interfaces:•RS-232•5-wireThe maximum baud rate can be different based on systemclock and protocol.RS-232 Serial Interface
The OV529 uses an RS-232 serial interface fortransferring commands and data. The RS-232 interface iscapable of more than 921.6 Kbps transfer rate, limited byphysical layers.
Compression Engine
The OV529 features a compression/decompressionengine that can achieve a highercompression/decompression ratio and better imagequality for various image resolutions.5-Wire Serial Bus
The OV529 has a 5-wire serial bus for transferringcommands and data.Program Buffer
After power on, the OV529 will download firmware fromthe external serial program memory or from the host to theembedded program memory. Users can select theprogram download source using the pin settings. Thecontent of the program memory can be updated on the flyfrom the host through the serial interface.Other Miscellaneous Functions
Other miscellaneous functions of the OV529 are:•General purpose I/O pins•Optional serial EEPROM program memory•Support programming through RS-232 and 5-wire

Strobe pin is in input mode during the power-on reset stage to select operation mode. After the power-on reset stage, the strobe pin works the same as the other pins as described in the pin description table.
To reduce system cost, the OV529 is under testing for 2.5V I/O VDD. Because of an embedded 1.8V regulator, theOV529 can provide a single power solution, which is required for 2.5V only camera systems.
