1. 定义：过去进行时主要用于表示过去某个时间点正在进行的动作，有时也可

表示过去某个阶段一直在进行的动作。其形式为”was/were+ doing”。如：

The teacher was giving us an English lesson then. 老师那时正在给我们

上英语课。

What was she doing at nine o'clock yesterday? 昨晚九点她在做什么？

When I saw him he was decorating his room. 当我看见他的时候他正在装

饰房间。

2. 常见的时间状语有：then, at that time, this time yesterday, at （eight） yesterday

（morning）, the whole morning, all day yesterday, from nine to ten last evening等；或者与when, while,引导的过去时间状语连用。

如： My brother fell while he was riding his bicycle and hurt himself. It was raining when they left the station.

（1）. when引导的从句中的动词可以跟延续性动词和短暂性动词， 时态上可以是进行时，也可以是一般时；

while引导的状语从句中，谓语动词必须是延续性动词， 时态上必须是进行时

如： When/While we were having supper, the light went out. I was walking in the street when someone called me.

（2）. 若主、从两个动作都是延续性的或同时发生， 那么主、从句的动词都可

用过去进行时， 此时的时间状语从句一般由while 引导。

如：My father was cleaning for his car while I was playing basketball yesterday afternoon. 3. 过去进行时的用法

★ 表示过去某一时刻或过去一段时间内正在进行的动作，常和表示过去的时间状语then, at that time,

this time yesterday, at ten yesterday等连用，或用另一动作表示过去的时间。 如： I was washing my hair at 9:00 last Sunday. (介词短语表示时间点) When I got home, mom was cooking. (when从句表示时间点)

★可以表示过去一个阶段频繁发生或反复进行的动作，常与always等频度副词连用，以表示赞扬、不满或讨厌等感情色彩。

如：He was always borrowing money from me when he lived here.

Alice was always changing her mind. 爱丽丝总是在改变主意。

4. 与其它时态的区别 （1）与现在进行时的区别：

改错：My mother is cooking when I got home.

解析：现在进行时和过去进行时的共同特点是都表示动作正在进行，但现在

进行时前提是现在，而过去进行时的前提是过去，由when I got home 可看出前提是过去。

（2）与一般过去式的差别

I read a story book yesterday evening. I was reading a story book yesterday evening.

解析：一般过去式和过去进行时的共同特点是都用于表示过去发生的动作，但过

去进行时强调动作正在进行，而一般过去时则表示过去某一时间所发生的动作或状态，它表示的动作往往已经完成。“在”说明正在进行，而“I read a story book yesterday evening.”的意思是昨晚我读了一本故事书，言下之意就是已经读完了。
